Zandvoort, pearl on the North Sea in the palms of the Zuid-Kennemerland nature reserve and the Water Supply Territory, is a unique municipality on the North Sea. Because of its location on the North Sea and on the other side surrounded by two nature reserves, the place heavily attracts sun-worshippers and nature lovers. | 2. Information & Education |
Already in the 19th century Zandvoort was looked upon as a place for rest and recreation and a resort to be cured of many illnesses. Old pictures of the promenade richly illustrate this. The development of the town has continued. After WW II the town has grown into a tourist town that is annually visited by millions of visitors. Apart from the promenade and wide beaches, the town disposes of large nature reserves with a very large variety of flora and fauna. Zandvoort is about 9 km long and 4 km wide.

For the holiday-maker the municipality has plotted many cycle routes and trails through the nature reserves and landscapes. Also various organisations for nature conservation are active in this, including Natuurmonumenten, Hoogheemraadschap Rijnland, Amsterdam Waternet, etc. Not all nature reserves are freely accessible.

| 4. Green Policies |
The green and dynamic management of the coastal area is high on the priority list of the town of Zandvoort. The municipality is thoroughly conscious of the fact, that the preservation of nature and green area on the coast has an influence on the well-being of its inhabitants and visitors. Therefore the municipality is in favour of a dynamic coastal management, in which of course the safety of the inhabitants is of main importance.
An example of this is the Noordvoort project. This area has a high nature and urban landscape value, which the various parties want to restore. By causing the sand to fly about again a dynamic coastal strip comes into being and small dunes will arise on the beach. |

The town of Zandvoort aims to preserve these unique nature reserves. At least it considers improving the accessibility of these reserves from the residential areas. The municipality has laid down in its policy, that it will preserve the unique interaction between living, recreating and nature and where possible will expand and/or improve this. Because of the variety of dunes, sea, forest and open landscapes Zandvoort offers many possibilities to a broad public.
