Schouwen-Duiveland is one of the most important vacation areas on the
islands of Zeeland. The long-stay tourism is aimed at nature, clean
environment and swimming water of good quality. Therefore, it is of
great importance for the municipality to keep the swimming water clean.
Also, the variety of different waters on the territory have to be
taken in account. Schouwen-Duiveland borders on the North Sea with
broad and clean beaches from Westenschouwen to Brouwersdam.

On the north side is Grevelingenmeer, which has brackish water.
On the south side lies the Oosterschelde.
On the main land, Schouwen-Duiveland has no large swimming areas,
except the Nature Reserves and channels. |

| 7. Water Management |
|
|
The
drinking water for Schouwen-Duiveland is provided by Evides. For the
suppliance of drinking water, Evides has a waterworks company in the
dunes. The water comes from Grevelingenmeer and is infiltrated into
the dune area.

The installation is flexible to provide enough drinking water during
the seasonal fluctuations of the number of visitors. The company can
always supply enough drinking water of high quality. Schouwen-Duiveland
has three sewage treatment plants.

| 8. Sustainable Transportation |
|
|
Vacationers that visit Schouwen-Duiveland can find stillness, space, sports and recreation. The municipal board does its best to maintain its position on the vacation market and expand it. The term sustainability is the thread in the new environmental policy plan of the municipality of Schouwen-Duiveland. Smarter and sustainable transportation is one of the main points of attention in the policy plan. The possibility of a monorail for public transportation is being researched.

The municipality wants to reduce private transport in the town centres during the next years. Also, public transportation over water is being researched. The municipality issues a pass with a lot of advantages for visitors. Near Renesse a Park and Ride facility has been established where visitors can step over on public transportation for free.

| 9. Waste & Recycling |
|
|
The municipality of Schouwen-Duiveland has about 34,000 inhabitants spread over 21 residential areas of which Zierikzee, with about 10,000 inhabitants, is the largest. Most municipal services are located there. Also, the municipality has 4.2 million overnight stays and 1.5 million daily visitors.

The municipality of Schouwen-Duiveland has a sanitation department which has a main establishment in Zierikzee. The garbage of the 34,000 inhabitants and the visitors in collected and moved to the waste treatment plant in Moerdijk.

| 10. Climate & Energy |
|
|
Climate change has several consequences for Schouwen-Duiveland. In the framework of the Kyoto agreement, the municipality is obligated to take energy saving measures, which will reduce the emission of greenhouse gasses. Another important fact for the municipality is the rising of the sealevel due to higher temperatures on Earth. Both in policy and in implementation these aspects are taken into account.
