Introduction

Noordwijk is a seaside-resort with a great diversity of modern facilities for tourism and congresses. The municipality is surrounded by sea, extensive dunes, meadows and bulb fields. Noordwijk is already a member of the Blue Flag programme. Strengthening the role of environmental awareness by the Quality Coast programme will contribute to further sustainable development of the coastal zone in Noordwijk. Environmental sustainable development is the key-factor for further tourist development of Noordwijk.

Noordwijk has 25.000 inhabitants and is a coastal twin town. The municipality covers an area of 51.53 km² (of which 16.12 km² is water). Noordwijk is a popular summer holiday destination, but it is also a place to stay and explore the bulb field area in spring. The seaside resort Noordwijk aan Zee ("Noordwijk at Sea") has a sandy beach of 14 km, two seafront boulevards, a range of recreation facilities, restaurants and hotels ranging from one to five stars, conference facilities, luxury villas and apartments and the inevitable bars and discotheques. Noordwijk-Binnen ("Inner Noordwijk") has the administrative centre and beautiful historical quarters around the Great Church.

Noordwijk is surrounded by sea and mostly open dune landscapes. The dunes are a part of the Natura 2000 netwerk. Behind the dunes is a varied collection of cultural landscapes: the international famous bulb district between Leiden and Haarlem, peat meadows, polders and reclaimed marshlands with many ditches and traditional windmills.
