16. Tourism Pressure

100,000 tourists visit every year the village of Kouklia for the archaeological site of Sanctuary of Aphrodite and the archaeological museum. Tourist development in the area is limited inland, mainly concentrated in 3 golf resorts. Coastal strip is protected, either as part of a Natural Park or as archaeological area (e.g. the Rock of Aphrodite beach).

17. Leisure & Recreation
Kouklia is an exceptional experience for leisure and recreation. The archaeological and medieval sites coexist with natural parks, golf resorts and pristine beaches. Agricultural landscapes with stone retaining walls and traditional plants such as olive trees, bananas and charob trees provide a unique nature for exploring.

18. Business Involvement

The area has a high potential to develop alternative tourism. However, until now the entire tourism development is rather on the conventional, massive tourism direction. The Community Council is dedicated to support the development of archaeological tourism, agro-tourism, eco-tourism etc. and shift from the massive tourism pattern that is threatening this historically important and pristine area and its beautiful landscapes.

Organic farming is a challenge both for agriculture and the livestock of the area. Incentives in-line with this objectives are supported in Kouklia. Green jobs are a challenge for the Community.

19. Community Participation

Regular citizens meetings are organised by the Council as well as dedicated workshops, e.g. 17 March 2011 the workshop for promoting home composting. Citizens are encouraged to participate.

20. Health & Safety

Kouklia is a healthy and safe area. No dangerous activities take place in the area. The landscape is mild. Criminality is zero. The environment is well preserved, without heavy traffic or other polluting activities.
