| 6. Blue Flags & Beaches |
|
|
The absolutely clean coastal waters and the pristine beaches are
the characteristic of the area. Coastal zone is not constructed and
there is no coastal development on the coastal strip. Two beaches
have the Blue Flag. Bathing water is monitored once a month: all the
water samples from the Municipal Beach of Kouklia are in accordance
with Directive 79-160-CEE. The Municipality of Kouklia was awarded
the Quality Coast award since 2009.

| 7. Water Management |
|
|
Water scarcity is one of the major problems of Cyprus. Water management
in Cyprus is under the jurisdiction of the Central Government.
|
|
However Kouklia Community Council promotes water saving measures
and technologies and invests on citizens awareness raising.
|

| 8. Sustainable Transportation |
|
|
Public transportation is a problem for Kouklia and generally for
Cyprus in total. Private car use is by far first in the preferences
of the locals.
|
|
Community Council achieved to establish 4 routes per day to connect
Kouklia with Pafos, the administration centre of the area. The efforts
will continue, to implement efficient and effective transport schemes
to serve the area.

| 9. Waste & Recycling |
|
|
Kouklia Community implements for the last 2 years, a recycling program
for domestic wastes. 15% of local domestic wastes is recycled. The
Council launched on March 2011 a pilot scheme for home composting.
|
|
The pilot home composting scheme is entirely funded by Kouklia Community
Council and includes the purchase of home composters and the training
of the locals through dedicated workshops.

| 10. Climate & Energy |
|
|
Kouklia hosts the biggest Aeolian park of Cyprus, the Orites Aeolian
Park, with 42 wind generators and 82 MV capacity. Use of alternative
energy sources is a priority for Kouklia.
