Nature
1. Natural Values

The north and south of Katwijk is surrounded by rich and protected dune areas. In the spring and summer parts are closed for the breeding season. Along the whole Boulevard there is also a narrow, connected zone of primary dunes. The zone is well kept, clean and has a typical pioneer dune vegetation with various rare plants, e.g. sea thistle. In the eastern part of Berkheide is the ‘Pan van Persijn’. This is a small, but beautiful and varied forested inner dune with deerpark, ponds for ducks and geese, special playing fields and a tearoom.

2. Nature Information
If you want to stroll along the beach or through the dunes and want to learn something about nature, you should visit Katwijk. Walks are organised on a regular basis and the local Tourist Office (VVV) has various nature guides and walking and cycling routes about the area for sale. For beach visitors three information panels are located along the Boulevard during spring and summer.

If you have read these panels, you can discover the special coastal nature as you walk over the beach. A similar panel is placed at the ‘Pan van Persijn’. The municipality has reserved funds for the establishment of a nature and environment education (NME) centre.

3. Contact with Nature
There are several easy ways to access the dunes of Katwijk from the Boulevard. The dunes in the north and south are open to the public. However, during the breeding season parts of these dunes are closed. The beach of Katwijk is 4¼ km long and is accesible from the Boulevard and the dune areas. The dune area between the boulevard and the is closed to the public. However, there are beach access points where visitors can walk through the young dunes diagonally so you can experience a lot of the coastal nature. The Panbos (Panforest) is accessible from the dunes and from the eastern part of Katwijk.

4. Green Policies

Nature and sustainability are integrated into general policy in the municipality of Katwijk. A map with natural values has been made for the entire area. This map is used during development of projects (infrastructure/zoning schemes) and during maintenance work. The starting points in the sustainability profile are translated into various policy plans, e.g. green policy and urban development.

An example of this are the new plans to convert the former marine airport Valkenburg into a high quality residential and recreational area. Thanks to the municipality, this project will give new opportunities for environment friendly development, nature and tourism.

5. Open Landscapes

The buildings along the Boulevard of Katwijk are a well preserved and unique example of the Dutch post-war reconstruction period architecture and is also part of the provincial cultural historic main structure. The common characteristic of the residential homes along the Boulevard of Katwijk is that they are three stories high with a slanted roof.

Katwijk is proud of this building design. With the unique landscape setting of Katwijk with sea, beach, dunes and the outflow of the Old Rhine river, Katwijk still has the small scale characteristic of a former fishing village.
