Environment
6. Blue Flags & Beaches

In Katwijk you can bathe in the sea without danger. However, in periods of extreme rain additional sewage water from the hinterland is released into the Rhine, which ends up in the channel in Katwijk and is eventually released into the North Sea. On those days, the Bathing Water Quality is not optimal, but above legal standards. The municipality tries hard to inform swimmers about the bathing water quality and is working hard to improve this situation with the Hoogheemraadschap van Rijnland.

7. Water Management

Dune water company Dunea is responsible for the supply of drinking water in Katwijk and surrounding areas. During the process, water is prepurified and infiltrated at great depth in the dunes of Holland

It stays there on average for two months, after which it is pumped up and repurified. The advantage of this technique is that it is very sustainable and the water gets a natural taste. This in contrast to chemical purifying methods.

8. Sustainable Transportation

The old historic routes of Katwijk are pre-eminently fit to resolve the local traffic in pretty historical surroundings which makes you experience the local history and identity. From the city, bulbfields, and the dunes, Katwijk is very accessable by bicycle.

Various bus connections are also available. Also by water, Katwijk is very accessable, through the Old Rhine and the Oegstgeesterkanaal. Trade boats and pleasure boats use this possibility. Katwijk has two marinas.

9. Waste & Recycling

Local government official: “Tourists come here from far away to enjoy the beaches. A German holiday maker told me: The beach here is free and I don’t have to worry that my daughter will step in a piece of glass with her feet.” A clean beach means a nice day out. The municipality of Katwijk tries hard to ensure a clean environment on the beach.

10. Climate & Energy

Katwijk is active in policy concerning climate change and aims at above average sustainability policy. The municipality makes plans to protect itself from the rising sealevel, and also stimulates inhabitants and companies to take energy saving measures. Climate change is also used in plans for new residential neighbourhoods and industry areas.
