The performance of destinations are measured through a set of 18 criteria (QualityCoast milestones) like “nature” and “bathing water quality”. These milestones have been agreed upon in a QualityCoast pilot phase (2004-’06) by 21 European partners as part of the EU Coastal Practice Network (CoPraNet). QualityCoast towns and islands will continue their cooperation within an EU-funded INTERREG 4C programme with the aim to improve their performance in the field of sustainability and planning; and to improve the methodology. The present milestones will be reconsidered and made operational as part of a real label for sustainable coastal management and tourism. In this context consideration will also be given to new milestones including those that have been proposed by partners (e.g. Climate Change and Cultural Landscapes). The QualityCoast programme is led by EUCC – The Coastal Union and the performance of all partners reviewed by an independent Jury for the QualityCoast Awards.
