The municipalities of Goedereede, Dirksland, Middelharnis and Oostflakkee constitute the South Holland island of Goeree-Overflakkee. The municipality of Goedereede lies in the western part of this island and is bordered by three bodies of water: the North Sea (Voordelta), Haringvliet and Grevelingenmeer. Of old, the island inhabitants have fought against the North Sea, which was often won by the sea, but the land was reclaimed as many times. The western part of Goeree-Overflakkee consists of raised ground, dikes and sand accretion. The rest of the landscape of Goedereede has the following characteristics: vast dune areas, broad beaches, small-scale embankments, nature areas, creeks, channels and agricultural areas. Besides sweet water areas, there are also saltwater areas, which results in a rich and varied flora and fauna. Of old, the dynamic nature area is still developing. For example, the creation of the Maasvlakte has caused the development of a vast nature area along the coasts of South Holland and Zeeland. A third of the area of Goedereede consists of nature areas. Nearly half of the territory of the municipality is agricultural. Tourism, agriculture and fisheries are the economical driving forces for the municipality of Goedereede.
