Introduction

Ameland is a West Frisian island with a very specific nature and culture, and it is not without reason that it is called the Wadden diamond.

The island is 27 kilometres in length and at most 4 km wide. The inhabitants of Ameland live in four villages: Buren, Hollum, Ballum and Nes, of which the last three have been declared protected rural areas.
